Hi Richard, the 20cm entry to the chimney would be quite small in width if it wasn't as per wider air vent gradually narrowed upwards into the chimney of this size. It is quite common when you look around at pictures, some ovens get black color above the entry for the smoke has no appropriate size way to enter the hot air passage and go up. (Email me a picture of the oven I can have a look at it.)
If you try to make/change the air vent e.g. wide as the door is, or even a bit wider (+ 3-5cm on each side), you will see the exhaust will all be dragged up nicely into the chimney pipe and nothing will go throughout anywhere else, just into the chimney and up. 20 or 25cm depth will work in an indoor wood fired oven fine.
