Where does the food go in the wood oven?

I am new to the concept of wood ovens. Does the food go into the dome part with the fire? Is the open space on the first floor just for storage? I am very interested and would like to build one of these at a cabin where we have no electricity. Pizza in the great outdoors would be wonderful.
