Hi Eugene,
I am planning on following Rado's design. I will just add 6" of gravel below the footing walls. This will provide a strong slab that will float with the seasons and not be too difficult to make.
I will also wait until the spring. I am currently replacing our wood deck with a brick patio and will build the oven off the patio. I was originally planning on building the slab this fall and having that part done but then I realized, if it moves at all due to frost, my slab that used to be level can no longer be trusted as a reference surface!
