Thanks Rado, I really appreciate your time and advice.
Last night we had a long 4 hour firing, did roast chicken & veges and the nice recipe you posted for the potato bread. It all cooked exceptionally well, especially the bread.
Unfortunately it looks like the cracks are from oven expansion as you pointed out. More showed up and I did notice a little closing in them this morning. No wonder you seem to prefer making the boxed in types, makes sense and I expect less trouble in the long run. I will now look at boxing in or if the cracking does not become too severe, I might put on another render coat & then build a tin roof over the top on log frame.
