You can get fireclay in 20 kg bags from Hardware Stores for around $10.00. You could also substitute fireclay for builders clay which is made by Blue Circle Cement and available in Australia.
The most important thing is to ensure that the sand is finely sieved. I had to re-sieve some sand recently because it had fine pebbles in it. The hearth must be dead flat.
