Bob,
I don't know how Rado feels but I have read that traditional French bread ovens used soil as the insulator and also there were a great many pioneer ovens simply dug out of the side of a hillside. I think it should work and it would certainly be interesting to see how it works. I have considered building an oven in that way the next time.
