If you are building a Alan Scott Oven Ed, The concrete cladding actually creates the process so that your dome does not actually collapse. It acts like a large clamp keeping everything up.
So not only insulating your oven it stop the dome from collapsing as well. And of course, the dense heavy cladding layer absorbs and retains lots of heat making the oven much more efficient.
