My comment here directly relates to one that I made to your earlier query about the use of refractory mortar on the oven dome. As I said then, the commercial refractory mortar that I used just set up very, very quickly. I was advised by my local mortar dealer that it was best to soak the bricks first so that they would not rapidly soak up the water from the mortar and make it set up even faster.
As for the timing of the soak, I just kept a bucket of water handy and dumped the bricks in it for perhaps a minute before using them.
