Hi Marc,
I think I answered same posting before. I will look for it and write again. Can be done. Material must be good and put together out of smaller blocks as you already mentioned. Cracks are main consideration as larger segments crack much easier because of heat differences in the material. When build using bricks all moves nicely. Best would be to make several initial tests, if it wasn't one oven but ongoing production.
