That could be right. With diameter increase also height of the chimney would have to be increased in order to create draft in the chimney. You're obviously connecting your oven into existing chimney and need draft.
With outdoors ovens it's not really a chimney as such with draft; it's just a hot air passage chimney with no draft in it. It only directs the fumes upwards letting the hot air free a bit above eyes level. r
