I have started very small fires each night about 1/2 hr to 45 min to start the drying process, it seams to be burning quit well the soot has covered the top of the dome down to about 1 2/3 of a brick from the base.
Come sat I will start the concrete cover, I'll take your point and give it a render coat over the concrete, this will make it easier to finish nice and smooth, plus I will give it some colour as well make it real trick.
I will get some photos to you after the concrete has gone on.
The bricks for the dome are just standard house bricks. I was going to get pavers but I thought what happens if they can not take the heat and crack!
