Hi Q-chan,
I am not sure if you can mix ordinary cement into this mortar, most refractory mortars manufacturers write on the packaging not to contaminate it with cement etc., it later burns out and would change its properties. I am not saying they are right that it isn't just a recipe secret, but a quick test in a small kiln would be best way to find out. I understand the earthquakes concern though. Most important thing will be to make sure the mortar on its own hardens well. Can you buy air setting refractory mortar(?), it hardens without any heat. r
