Hi Giles,
I am using recycled red bricks for the dome of my oven with firebricks for the hearth. Most of the recycled red bricks have fine cracks or chips and they seem to be fine so far, though I have only fired the oven once to cook in. I would have thought that the firebricks would be fine though you might get a small bit of pealing from them.
