I used a similar product, HeatStop 50, for my entire dome and the back of the oven. It worked just fine using it for everything, rather than only using the HeatStop for just the part where the arches come together. I must say that I see one problem with using this product together with regular mortar - it sets up REALLY fast.
For myself, the idea of trying to use this stuff together with another type of mortar seems really tough. An advantage, however, of using the two types of mortar is that you could save significantly on cost, since the FireStop is really very expensive.
